Early sound exposure in the womb shapes the auditory system

Inside the womb, fetuses can begin to hear some sounds around 20 weeks of gestation. However, the input they are exposed to is limited to low-frequency sounds because of the muffling effect of the amniotic fluid and surrounding tissues. A new MIT-led study suggests that this degraded sensory input is beneficial, and perhaps necessary, for auditory development. Using simple computer models of the human auditory processing, the researchers showed that initially limiting input to low-frequency sounds as the models learned to perform certain tasks actually improved their performance. Along with an earlier study from the same team, which showed that...

Level up a convenience store curry pan to a depachika gourmet meal

Japanese curry bread has never looked, or tasted, this good! If you haven’t noticed, we love curry bread, or “kare pan” as it’s known in Japan. Not only have we taste-tested all the ones sold at the country’s most popular convenience stores, we’ve also tried the humble curry bread in the shape of Mt Fuji, covered in Godiva chocolate, and heck, we’ve even spread it on bread and drunk it as cider. New text-to-image network from Google beats DALL-E

[ comments ] unprecedented photorealism × deep level of language understanding unprecedented photorealism deep level of language understanding Google Research, Brain Team We present Imagen, a text-to-image diffusion model with an unprecedented degree of photorealism and a deep level of language understanding. Imagen builds on the power of large transformer language models in understanding text and hinges on the strength of diffusion models in high-fidelity image generation. Our key discovery is that generic large language models (e.g. T5), pretrained on text-only corpora, are surprisingly effective at encoding text for image synthesis: increasing the size of the language model in Imagen...

Is It Really Spoiled?

In an effort to do away with food waste in our home over the past two years, I've been logging onto various websites to see how I can use what I have...and sometimes to see how I can salvage what I have on hand.   Do you know how to tell if food is actually spoiled?  Do you know what you can salvage?  Have you ever wondered if you might refreeze raw meat?  What are the guidelines for using leftovers?First let us study storage.  How and when you store food is everything when it comes to saving food.  I've shared...
