Going on a spring trip or just need to spruce up your spring wardrobe? Fill in the gaps with these cute tops, jumpsuits, sandals, and more.
I mentioned a few weeks ago that Ben and I were trying to plan a family spring break trip but, long story short, we’re ditching the kids and going somewhere by ourselves. Poor babies! Flight prices were making us gag and the thought of driving anywhere more than 5 hours away with Gwen still rear-facing in her car seat (and being old enough to know that she doesn’t want be rear-facing in her car seat – ask me about the recent road trip we learned this on,) didn’t scream “wooo, spring break!” to us.
That said, Mom and Dad are hopping on a plane and hopefully not getting CoronaVirus and hopefully not getting quarantined upon our return home and hopefully just having a real nice time because we haven’t gone anywhere together for more than 24 hours since Lincoln was practically a baby WOOOOOO!
Anyway, I went shopping this past weekend for clothes for the trip and found the most adorable pieces I want to share in case you too are heading out for spring break, or are simply looking to spiff up your spring wardrobe. For reference, I am 5’2 and a conservative dresser (ie no low cut necklines, tight tops, nor short shorts). Additionally I am super picky about clothes – for example, I don’t like tight shirts yet all the casual shirts I’ve tried on recently from Madewell and J Crew, specifically, have felt very sloppy. Like, I need loose-goose but also slim-trim. Is that too much to ask?
Apparently not – here are my finds!
Lily Ruffle Tie Front Jumpsuit
I am fully on board the jumpsuit train because they look amazing on tall women, and are cute on short women too (or at least that’s what I tell myself.) I spotted this adorable jumpsuit through the window at LOFT this weekend and made a beeline for it. OBSESSED!
Why I love it:
- The V-neck is conservative.
- There’s a cute tie in the front so you don’t need to add a belt.
- The pant length is any-height-friendly. For example, unlike the model, the pants hit at my ankles, which I prefer. Pair with sandals and a jean jacket and you’re set.
- SO COMFORTABLE.
- Currently 40% off + an extra 10%!

Ruffle Sleeve Denim Top
Two things: 1.) I am one of the unfortunate people who look like a train conductor in a button-down chambray shirt, which breaks my heart because I adore the look of chambray. 2.) The ruffles on most ruffle/flutter tops are so big that I feel like I’m about to flutter off into outer space. Enter the Chambray Ruffle Top from Express!
Why I love it:
- The ruffles are super soft so they lay flatter than any other ruffle top I’ve tried on. They’re a modest size, as well.
- The top is loose but not tenty.
- Super comfortable and regular bra-friendly.
- Can be worn untucked or front-tucked with white jeans, or tucked into a skirt.

Relaxed Scoopneck T-Shirt
I’m a T shirt and jeans girl in my everyday life so when I find a well fitting t-shirt at a great price that’s not paper thin, it’s a good day. This Gap Scoopneck T is so comfortable and well fitting that I bought it in three colors!
Why I love it:
- NOT PAPER THIN! We’ve talked before about the fashion industry’s move to paper thin tops in the past few years, which I cannot get down with. (Yes, I’ve tried Madewell’s.) This shirt has a really nice weight and is not see through.
- Length is great – not too short nor too long – hits mid buns.
- LOVE the tacked cuff detail on the sleeves so you don’t have to worry about them unrolling during the day.
- $14 – $17 right now!

Ruffle Apron Wide-Leg Jumpsuit
This jumpsuit is a dead ringer for the Madewell one that was out awhile ago and it is so adorable in person. Again, the pant length for me at 5’2 was at my ankle, though I did not try on a petite size. I’d pair this with a kelly green, cream, or coral colored sweater for a pretty spring look. Being denim though, it goes with everything!
Why I love it:
- Ruffles are not overwhelming.
- Super comfortable and soft.
- POCKETS!
- Fits extremely smooth and well. There are a couple reviews on the website talking about a bulging zipper but I didn’t experience that.

Striped Ruffle Shell
I spotted this Striped Ruffle Top when I was running around the mall with the kids last week and initially dismissed it because I don’t normally like high neck shirts ( I am seriously so picky – can’t be too low but also can’t be too high! ) but the stripes and ruffles were so cute that I made myself try it on when I was back by myself. It was an immediate yes!
Why I love it:
- Flowy and fluid but trim fitting.
- I don’t normally like “shells” because they’re often made with polyester. This is rayon which I find much more comfortable and easy to wear.
- Small ruffle detail – apparently I am all about the ruffles for spring!
- Casual enough to wear with jeans or shorts, but dressy enough to wear to the office.
- Currently 40% off + an extra 10%!

More Spring Staples
I didn’t purchase the following this past weekend though I’ve gotten all of them out in the past few weeks as the weather has started to warm up (hallelujah!) They are all spring staples in my wardrobe.
Utility Jacket
Full of pockets, durable yet stylish, and warm too, a utility coat is a must for spring. I purchased my green utility jacket from Stich Fix many years ago and wear it every single day in the spring – and fall for that matter!
Similar to what I own:

Strappy Sandals
I am a weird creature of habit and own two pairs of Sam Edelman Gigi Sandals for spring and summer – tan and black – that I just keep replacing every couple of years. They are so comfortable and cute! Can be worn with dresses or jumpsuits just as easily as jeans or shorts.
Waterproof Boots
I purchased these Aigle Rubber Boots three years ago after seeing them in Magnolia Magazine (if they’re good enough for Joanna Gaines, they’re good enough for me!) and adore them. They’re extremely comfortable and warm, easy to pull on, and are great for rainy spring days. I even garden in them if it’s wet or muddy! They’re a bit pricey but they look the same as the day I got them.
